Abstract

This paper explores the emotional and aesthetic dimensions of Aranyakanda, the third book of Valmiki’s Ramayana, through the lens of Rasa theory from classical Indian poetics. Titled "Between Forest and Feeling: The Interplay of Rasa in Aranyakanda," the study examines how the forest setting becomes a symbolic and emotional backdrop that amplifies the various rasas—particularly karuṇa (pathos), bhakti (devotion), śṛṅgāra (love), and raudra (anger). The transitions in mood and tone reflect the psychological transformations of key characters such as Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana as they navigate exile, loss, and moral conflict. By analyzing selected verses and narrative moments, the paper highlights how the text weaves emotional depth into its ethical and mythological framework. This research underscores the sophistication of ancient Sanskrit literature in portraying human emotion and contributes to a deeper understanding of Indian aesthetic philosophy within epic narratives.
